Essex Miniature Sewing Machine in a stitching demontration

Essex Miniature Sewing Machine in a stitching demontration This chain stitch sewing machine dates around 1947. Based on an expired Singer patent, it was intended as an affordable fully functional sewing machine, which was used in a great many households in the UK. The unit price was around five and a half pounds, which amounted to more than a months average salary at the time. Though expensive, this was a fair bit less than it's more substantial competitors like the heavy Singer and Jones machines. There was in fact a high demand for these machines. Sometimes there was a waiting list of a number of months.
This machine runs very well and has been well maintained during its long life.
Here I do a good demonstration of not quite setting the tension correctly. I then make a little adjustment and this machine shows how well it can handle a double fold of canvas. Like all old sewing machines it benefits from regular and generous lubrication on all pivots, gears and oscillating parts.
This machine is currently for sale on eBay and the main purpose of the video is to demonstrate how nicely it stitches.
