I was walking out of class when I heard a group of my classmates freaking out up ahead. I assumed a fight had broken out or something, so I ran towards them to take a look. But as I got closer, I realised it was something much worse...They were actually panicking, like they’d seen something bad happen! I managed to squeeze through the group of people blocking the entrance, and what I saw outside was seriously disturbing.
It was the most shocking scene... My Dad... there he was again, scamming people and claiming to be the real jesus christ . he was walking down the street barefoot carrying a giant wooden cross. I wanted the ground to swallow me up there and then...I was so humiliated! I couldn’t believe my dad would do all that for money! He wasn’t just walking though...oh no, he was also handing out flyers and blessing people as he walked by them. The boy who had been freaking out the most was now filming my dad. Give it an hour, and this would be all over the internet!
I started to walk away from the door, praying that the boys wouldn’t turn around and see me. But it was too late. I was about halfway down the hall when one of them shouted in my direction, “Hey Eden, my girl! isn’t that your old man out there? What...does he think he’s Jesus or something?” I just ignored my classmate, and decided I had to do something. I ran out onto the street. I had never bunked off school in my life, but my dad was making a scene and I was so worried about him! I was crying as I ran towards him. He’d taken it too far now! This wasn’t ok!!
I caught up with him and made him walk home with me. I was so embarrassed because he kept trying to hand out flyers and of course, he was carrying that gigantic cross. I just kept shouting at him, telling him to stop humiliating me and to maybe act normal for once and stop dressing like he was born 2,000 years ago! I didn’t even give him a chance to reply as we reached our house. I just stormed inside. But as I went through the door, I heard him say, “But I was born 2,000 years ago...”! He had seriously lost the plot.
I went straight to my mom. I left dad on the porch and tried to get mom to come outside with me so I could show her the cross. My mom barely even looked up from the crossword puzzle she was doing. She was so used to my dad’s eccentric behavior that she didn’t even care. She didn’t even think there was anything wrong!!
The whole time I was trying to get my mom to notice how weird dad was being, he was sitting on the porch with one of our elderly neighbors. Even from inside, I could hear him. He was chanting some kind of prayer about healing and our neighbor actually looked scared. I told dad dinner was ready so that he’d come inside and so our neighbour could get away. Our neighbor thanked me with his eyes and wandered off. But dad didn’t come in. He said he wasn’t hungry. Instead he said, “My food, said Jesus, is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.”
And it just went downhill from there...
My dad has always been quite a religious man, but recently he started acting a bit crazy about the whole church thing. After going there so many times, he claimed said that he could feel the holy spirit entering him, and that he was meant to be the Jesus of the modern era. He’d really started to believe that according to him, he was Jesus Christ who’d come to save the youth from sin. My god!! This 43 year old grown ass man genuinely thought he WAS Jesus! Worst part was that many people actually believed him and he made a good chunk of money off of it. People would come and ask my dad to heal them. In fact, every weekend our front yard was full of people waiting in line to see my father, or should I say, Mr. christ.
And mom didn’t exactly help the situation. It’s not like she encouraged dad’s behavior, but she let dad quit his job so he could focus his time on religious stuff. I wanted to shake my mom! Dad was as much responsible for this family, even though my dad was making tons of money, we had no idea where it went, as she was, and yet she just took it upon herself to support us all. And she was exhausted. She was like a zombie sat in front of the TV. I sat down next to her and was about to try to talk to her again, when my phone beeped.
It was a Facebook notification for some event...
I opened it up and couldn’t believe it! It was from my dad!! He’d set up a Facebook page and this event was open to anyone who wanted to come along and be baptized and be surrounded by the holy spirit for a 100$ each. And he’d actually had the cheek to invite me!! I got up to go and have a word with him, and that’s when I noticed one of the flyers he’d been handing out. It was for the event too! I was so angry I wanted to rip every last flyer up into shreds and throw them at him!!
